Curation

Music industry panels, workshops, events and festivals

In Place of War has a longstanding history of curating music industry events across festivals and cultural events. This includes as consultants on the development of new music industry events, such as Primavera Pro in Spain, DoaDoa in Uganda and Shoko Festival, Zimbabwe, and as curators and designers of panel talks - with partnerships including Tallinn Music Week in Estonia, Festival Convida in Brazil, and Amsterdam Dance Event.

We design panels that speak to music as culture, rather than music as commerce. We explore music that happens in the margins and we explore how music is being used as a tool for social change. We look at the underground spaces, clubs and festivals that are breaking the mould, even at the risk of their own safety. We explore music in war zones and why people continue to make it at times of crisis.

We have worked with:

Panelists we have programmed:

  • Ed O’Brien, Radiohead

  • Marcus Ross, FUGA

  • Kim Rowell, ITN/BBC

  • Sama Abdulhadi, Palestine

  • MABE, Venezuela

  • Giorgi Kikonishvili, Bassiani, Georgia

  • Naja Orashvili, Bassiani, Georgia

  • Wizzy, Queens Against Borders, Syria

  • Mahmood Jrere, DAM/PMX, Palestine

Academic panels and workshops

In Place of War started as a major Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funded research project at The University of Manchester in 2004, and spun out as a charity in 2015. It’s a living example of the legacy a research project can have, as it continues to positively impact the lives of thousands of people in communities facing conflict, many of whom were part of the initial research. It shows how research can be symbiotic and how research can feed into practice, and how practice can feed into future research projects.

This relationship with academia has continued to this day, winning multiple major funding bids and awards and being part of many interdisciplinary research networks. We are often asked to speak about the journey of In Place of War, which CEO & Artistic Director, Ruth Daniel, and Director of Research and Education, Teresa Bean, talk about with passion and sensitivity.

Past presentations and collaborations have included

  • ASPECT

  • AHRC

  • Re:Shape

  • British Council

  • RSA, London

  • University of Cambridge

  • University of Oxford

  • Queen’s University Belfast

  • University of Warwick

In Place of War is a game-changer; through the integral projects, initiatives and campaigns they run they’re making an enormous impact to people’s lives on a global scale. I’ve had the privilege of witnessing this work first-hand with the In Place of War team in Colombia, and it was life-changing – the difference it makes and the insight and knowledge I gained shifted my perspective and expanded the restrictions I’d place on my own realms of possibility. Inspiring doesn’t come into it, these people are remarkable.

Kim Rowell, ITN Productions

Witnessing In Place of War's work brings more than priceless inspiration. It enables relationships to bud, ideas to sprout, and projects to flourish. It sustains the sharing of views and practices across the world that nurtures creativity and imagination. It bolsters thinking thanks to the inspirational people one meets.”

Julien Fehlmann, International Relations & Music Association”

Being involved with In Place of War has impacted my work tremendously - it continuously reminds me to think globally, to add a charitable component to our projects whenever possible, and to always find joy while working in the music industry. In Place of War allows us to build a global music community while uplifting each other through the alliance of art and commerce.

Shannon Herber, A0K1VERSE

I try to bring the lessons learned and insights from In Place of War’s work to my day to day, and try to think about how this work can be expanded to other areas that might not seem in need today, as I think the whole world could benefit from this type of collaboration, nurturing, and change-making.”

Tommy Young, Google"

“In the day-to-day it's easy to lose sight of how music and art is not just a business. It's also a life saver. Coming from an artist management background, and then on to music licensing, I have always enjoyed being a connector-of-dots. In my advisory role on the GAB with In Place of War, being able to introduce people from my wider network to those making REAL change in their communities - whether it be for an equipment donation, setting up an artist collaboration, or simply for advice - I can honestly say, it's the best feeling in the world, and all parties get something out of the interaction. Humans helping humans, with little effort but with a whole lot of love.”

Janesta Boudreau, Independent Music Industry Executive
